Santiago Zoo
Day 826
91,467 km since the beginning of the journey
Santiago. Chile.
Santiago Zoo is absolutely worth a separate post. Somehow I had taken really a lot of pictures.
The Chilean National Zoo (Zoológico Nacional de Chile) is situated in the centre of town, on San Cristobal Hill and was opened in 1925. According to Wikipedia there are 158 different species of animals.
The ticket cost 3000 Chilean pesos, or 5 Euros. Immediately at the entrance there was a map of the zoo, as everywhere else.
A Hippo in the sunshine.
Suricates.
And then – surprise! Usually the visitors are kept apart from animals and birds, with a few exceptions. With one exception I have in mind the Lujan Zoo, where one can go both - into a lion or a tiger cage. Here one can go into a bird cage and this bird cage has the size of several decent hangars .
And the walking-path for visitors is above the trees.
Further on the panorama of the town, slightly blurry.
The red one on the right is Scarlett Ibis.
Meanwhile, some people are moving around and the birds from the handrails fly away for a moment.
And here are the penguins! In a small swimming pool a dozen Humboldt penguins are swimming and they are very similar to Patagonian penguins, except that Humboldt penguins have one black stripe between their neck and chest and the Patagonian penguins have two black stripes. .
Some are swimming and others are just lying.
Chloephaga picta. When I was driving along the Carretera Austral, there were flocks of them in the fields near the Cerro Castillo.
Scarlet Macaw.
The parrot cages.
Then there are two camels.
Nandu looking over a fence.
Behind - Santiago in sunset.
Chilean Flamingo.
And finally - the elephants.
In conclusion - the best surprise for me was the building for the birds - it is really a unique opportunity to walk around in the cage. Perhaps there is this kind of possibility in some other zoos, but I've not experienced it before. .
There was supposed to be a white tiger, but his dwelling was being renovated at the moment. White tiger pictures can be seen here - http://tarmotamming.blogspot.com/2012/08/buenos-aires-tigre.html, I just checked that there is only one picture of the Buenos Aires Zoo in my blog and nothing about the zoos in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
